Goodbye Boston, Hello New York City

Written by Romain on Thursday, 25 of December 2008 at 22:28

Wednesday, 24th, 10.25 : There I am in Boston for 3 days and time is running very fast here ! My first day here was an opportunity for me to discover the downtown city, which is very full of people and animations due to christmas holidays. My first impression about Boston is that it’s not such a huge city (for example, I had the opposite feeling about Toronto) and it’s quite easy to travel within the city. A susual, I was loaded like hell (I’m now close to 25 kilos, including souvenirs and presents from Canada that I ‘ll have to send soon in France), but I’m just feeling happy here. But I must confess that the cold wind was terrible, and I’ve never felt cold like this since the beginning of my trip (except in Tadoussac, but -40°C was something that I’ll never forget !)

During the night, I met Juan, a very cool american guy originally coming from Guatemala, who host me for a night, since his flatmates flew back to Europe for Chistmas holidays (HUGE thanks to Ivan for his nice room !). And once again, many thanks to Juan for his time and his warm welcome.

I spent my second day in Boston walking inside the campus of the world famous Harvard Univerisity. I felt a real harmony inside between students, as well as a strong dynamism. But I guess that’s normal : it’s one of the world’s best universities ! You can see the pictures here. And you will enjoy them, since I had the chance to take them while the sun was going down and it was just simply beautiful.

Because Juan was leaving to New York for Christmas holidays, I had to find another place to stay. One adviced me a very cheap hostel called the Farrington Inn (located on Farrington Avenue) where it’s possible to share a room with some other people for 27,50$ a night (33$ including taxes). However, even if I found the welcome pretty warm, I had cold showers ! I finally could met some other couchsurfers in a very nice bar called Big City located on Brighton Avenue. I met Nicolas, a guy who has both french and american citizenship (and who is coming from the same city than me : Lyon), Andrew (we spoke a lot about video editing and about my trip, he was a really cool guy), but also Rosie, Chris, Adam, Dane…When I went back to the hostel, I met the guy who was sleeping just next to me, Carlos, who is coming from Spain and currently studying Law in Puerto Rico. He took few weeks to travel in the USA. For the little story, our other roomate just went out of jail (I heard a phone conversation), but I did not try to learn more about his story. To conclude about Boston, I would say that I met a lot of very interesting people (and a lot of american people who apparently love france), a first view from the States, and once again, walking, walking and walking !

15.52 : I’m writing these few lines while I’m sitting in my bus to New York City, where I’ll meet a friend of mine, Mathieu, to avoid spending Christmas alone. If ever you’re planning to do such a trip (from Boston to NewYork), a chinese company called Lucky Star offers one way tickets for 15$ (but don’t expect too much inside the bus !)
New York City, I’m coming ! Too many people too see there, and especially my familly that is visiting me for new year’s eve.

Thursday, 25th , 10.52 : I’m writing you these few lines from the Queens area in New York, where I arrived yesterday after a longer trip than expected (6h rather than 4, roads were really busy !). I was so amazed by Times Square, Ground Zero (really scary I would say…), and nice christmas’s diner in the Little Italy. More soon, I’m now going downtown too see more !

Live from Toronto

Written by Romain on Friday, 19 of December 2008 at 2:19

Here am I finally in Toronto, after a 7h30 trip by bus from Montréal. And what a trip ! Here is how things happened: once arrived at the bus terminal, I was looking for a youth hostel many people recommanded to me. Outside, the snow is falling strongly and I’ve no idea where the auberge is. It’s already 23.00, there isn’t a lot of people in the streets, and I’m loaded like hell with my both backpacks. I finally lost myself in the streets of Toronto for almost 1h30 (but it was a good opportunity to discover the city), when I suddenly found it. Tired and wet, I was looking like a zombie and the receptionist asked me if I was crazy. Well, I answered that it’s possible since I’m travelling the world alone. Once I’ve ckecked-in, I also had the pleasure to lost myself a second time in the streets to find the right building where I was supposed to spend the night. Indeed, I walked 10mn in the wrong direction with my 25 kilos backpack…While this building I was looking for was only 20m from the reception. I was so hungry (I did not eat since the day before) that I finished my day eating the best Nachos I’ve ever seen at Gabby’s (ask for the “Big Nachos” with chicken and guacamole, it will cost you almost $15 for a 35cm x 35cm plate).

Today, a very scary thing happened to me : when I was walking on the streets, a huge piece of ice fell from like 60 meters high, only 1 meter from me… A women who was walking behind me was as schocked that I was…

But this first day in Toronto was a really cool one, since i had the pleasure to discover the city centre, to clim the CN Tower, which is the second highest tower in the world (553,33 meters high). The tower also has the world’s highest observation area located at 447 m from the ground (this is from where I took the following picture) !

Tomorrow ? Niagara Falls !

About me

I'm a 26 years old young graduate, living in Lyon, France and who traveled 12 months around the world. The purpose of this travel was to fully comprehend the international environment by looking through different people’s eyes. Together we will be learning about each countries values and beliefs, fears and dreams, worries and concerns through pictures, people’s stories and my experiences. Hopefully, this will bring a new point of view, a new perspective over the world’s view. About me
